PREMISE: A man remembers a tragic Easter weekend in 1985 when a flash flood swept his family away. Still, he can't blame the sovereign God, only his own disbelieving folly.
August's Progress
We've got continuity.
Continuity is a word I learned in the Military while working on generators. A mechanic uses a tool called an ohms reader to test for continuity, the ability of an electrical current to flow freely through a system.
I have adapted the word in my writing to relate to how the plot, themes and messaging flows through the story.
So I spent August going through my story chapter by chapter making sure each one flowed out of the previous and into the next in a meaningful, and understandable way. This story is not 100% linear, so it took some ingenuity.
Here is the end of chapter one, right before the main character begins to tell us his story. It sets a somber tone for the entire book.
I got up. “I need coffee. You want some.” I forgot I had already asked.
Kent sighed. “Fine. Small cup, but you know the most beautiful part of the day is going to be gone.”
“The most beautiful part,” I repeated to myself. I was aware that I was moving slowly, watching the black spout of liquid pour out into our cups like the Genegantslet had poured out of its banks. I could not stop saying those words to myself. The most beautiful part is gone. The most beautiful part is gone.
My Goal for September
Now that I've got the main course of my story flowing it is time to zoom in, clean up and beautify the wording. Still trying to ignore any technical edits at this point.
This is a more tedious process and I expect it to go well into October.
Next month I think I'll tell you all about the Main Character.
