ROUGH DRAFT UPDATE #1
THE RIP VAN WINKLE BOOK
The Idea
In the back of my mind I've been wanting to write a sort of Rip Van Winkle story. Not a retailing, but to use the idea of a man who fell asleep and woke up many years later. Of course, mine would be a gospel story.
I have kept his name, Rip Van Winkle. I gave him a problem, then I put him to sleep, at the most inconvenient time. My Rip Van Winkle slumbers in an apple orchard somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains. There, he sleeps for 35 years before waking up to deal with his problem, and the many more that has developed.
Rip's problem
The town of Apple Gap has a proud heritage. The town Moto is “From our fathers to our sons.” The motto is emblematic of the town’s culture of passing their livelihoods down from one generation to the next. But Rip has nothing to pass to his son.
The problem gets worse
After rejecting a street evangelist’s notion of counting the gospel as a worthy thing to pass on to his son, Rip has an encounter with a different sort of “evangelist,” one who has his own promises of a bright future.
